Euphemism:
A euphemism is a pleasant-sounding expression substituted for an unpleasant or offensive expression on sensitive topics. It intends to downplay negative connotations. Euphemisms are not necessarily bad. Sometimes this is the right thing to do in order to respect other people’s feelings. For example, it is common courtesy to refer to someone’s death with the euphemism “passing away”. Saying “Mr. Smith passed away” is a more polite way of saying “Mr. Smith died”. Sometimes euphemisms are used to mislead people without being literally false. This is occurs especially in politics or public relations.
